This etching shows the Nassau Public Library from Gaol Alley when the wall stood. The Library which was constructed as a Gaol between 1798, and 1799 originally had prisoners' cells which occupied the first and second floors and a gallery surrounding a central space on the third floor, from which a bell rang to summon House of Assembly members to meetings.
Since 1879 the building has been occupied by the Nassau Public Library and Museum and the prisoners' cells are now loaded with books, charts, artifacts and etchings. The library has a most valuable collection of books on Bahamiana.
